Summer is the perfect time to explore the great outdoors, and Bastrop offers a variety of trails that cater to every level of adventurer—seeking a leisurely walk or an adrenaline-pumping adventure? These local trails and The Colony provide the perfect opportunity to stay active and enjoy the beauty of nature.

New Trails Coming to Mayfest Park

Mayfest Park is set to become a hub for outdoor enthusiasts with the addition of new trails. Recognizing the need for increased access and connectivity, the City of Bastrop has prioritized this project in its Parks Master Plan. With approximately $260,000 allocated for construction, the community will soon have more opportunities to explore the park’s natural beauty. City Manager Sylvia Carrillo emphasized that this project is independent of the Gateway Bastrop development and focuses solely on enhancing Mayfest Park.

McKinney Roughs Nature Park

McKinney Roughs Nature Park offers many activities and experiences for thrill-seekers and nature lovers. Whether you’re looking to zip-line through the canopy, hike scenic trails, or enjoy bird watching and having a picnic in a relaxing surrounding, the park has something for everyone.

Adventure seekers can also explore miles of trails on horseback or mountain bike, while those seeking a more leisurely experience can share their wildlife sightings on iNaturalist. Special event facilities and group lodging make McKinney Roughs Nature Park ideal for gatherings and outdoor fun.

Bastrop State Park

Bastrop State Park offers a variety of trails for everyone, each providing unique sightings of the park’s landscape and history, suitable for all hikers. From the moderate Piney Hill Spur, which connects campers to other trails with views of Carrizo sandstone, to the short and easy Pine Warbler Trail through native grasses, you will get your steps in while soaking up the natural beauty!

The hilly Post Oak Spur offers a 0.5-mile shaded path under post oaks, while the accessible Tree Army Trails wind through loblolly pines for up to 4.5 miles, making them perfect for wheelchairs. For more experienced hikers, the challenging 8.2-mile Lost Pines Loop offers a backcountry experience, requiring plenty of water and snacks.
